As our official kickoff for the Midcoast Maine Fishing Heritage Alliance, we will be showing the recently released documentary film on the Port Clyde Groundfishing Fleet, “The Fish Belong to the People.” The event is hosted by the St. George Conservation Commission, and will be followed by a panel discussion with local Port Clyde Groundfishermen.

Others have recognized the plight of the Midcoast fisheries. William Hyler’s film “The Fish Belong to the People”, a documentary about the Port Clyde fishermen, will premier October 3rd, 2009 at the Camden International Film Festival, with a pre-screening reception at the Island Institute, 386 Main Street in Rockland, at 3:00 p.m.

In Port Clyde, Maine, a family of groundfishermen struggles to develop a sustainable stewardship for the fishery in order to save a generations-old way of life against counter-productive government regulations and unfair markets that threaten to push them out of business forever. The film also focuses on how this group of fishermen is partnering with the Island Institute and other nonprofit organizations to achieve the goals of community and fisheries preservation.
